Colgate To Launch Plaque-detecting Toothbrush

Leading global consumer products company Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE: CL) has announced that it will soon be launching its own unique take on improving consumers’ tooth brushing experience. The Colgate Plaqless Pro smart electric toothbrush is a first-of-its-kind smart toothbrush that utilizes new optic sensor technology to detect biofilm buildup in the mouth. According to the press release, the device will revolutionize oral care by providing precise information in real time that is specific to each mouth.

The new smart electric toothbrush lets users see when all the biofilm buildup has been removed from their teeth with a light ring embedded around the toothbrush. The user will see a blue light when buildup has been found, and a white light when the area is clean. If the light remains blue, it indicates that they need to brush longer in that area of their mouth.

The Colgate Plaqless Pro toothbrush connects to the Colgate Connect App via Bluetooth technology for a “precise, personalized brushing experience,” says the press release. The app provides personalized data, coaching, and oral care tips, while sensors embedded in the toothbrush handle create a comprehensive map of the user’s mouth. Consumers can get instant brushing feedback as the app shows them exactly where they brushed their teeth, where they missed a spot, and if an area is truly clean.

Patricia Verduin, Chief Technology Officer for Colgate-Palmolive, said in a statement, “We’re excited to introduce this breakthrough technology with sensors that can see through foamy toothpaste to provide information that helps people take stronger ownership of their oral health. Our new Plaqless Pro delivers the superior cleaning of a powered toothbrush, the proven location tracking of advanced oral care devices, and now the detection of an oral scanner that enables personal brushing feedback in real time for remarkable clean.”

When launched later this year, the Plaqless Pro will be the first commercially available electric toothbrush that detects biofilm buildup and provides brushing information in real time. It was recently recognized at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as Best of Innovation for Health and Beauty. The device will soon be available at www.shop.colgate.com/ces.
